Bulls Split Matches on Central New York Tour

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team took the road for a pair of matches in Central New York, splitting the two contests. On Friday, the Bulls whitewashed Colgate, 7-0, without dropping a set to the Raiders. However, in a battle of two unbeatens on Saturday, the Bulls (6-1) fell to Cornell (4-0) by a 6-1 margin.

In the match against Colgate on Friday, senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) netted her 60th career victory to become the school’s all-time leader in singles wins. Nenova, playing second singles, defeated Colgate’s Elise Derose, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the 60-win plateau and pass current UB assistant coach Kristen Ortman for first place on the Bulls’ all-time list. On Saturday, Nenova’s unbeaten dual meet mark was stopped when she lost to Cornell’s Kasia Preneta, 6-2, 6-2. For her career, Nenova stands at 60-31 in singles play in her four years. She also became UB’s all-time doubles leader earlier this season and currently stands at 65-31, including a 14-5 mark this season with freshman partner Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia), forming UB’s number one doubles combination.

Harijanto Remains Perfect at Number One

Freshman Denise Harijanto remained perfect as UB’s new number one player since moving to the top of the ladder two weeks ago. On Friday, she breezed past Colgate’s Jackie Couture, 6-1, 6-2. Saturday, however, she needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Cornell’s Elizabeth Googe, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) and improve to 3-0 in the number one slot. Harijanto is now 13-4 in singles play and 6-1 in dual matches. With the two wins, the Bulls have not lost a number one match in dual play this season. Miglena Nenova, who Harijanto replaced in the top spot, is 4-0 when playing at number one.

Stan’s Streak Comes to an End

Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) won her ninth consecutive singles match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Colgate’s Erin Fenn at number three on Friday, but that’s as far as her winning streak would climb. Stan, who moved up to the number three position for last weekend’s matches as senior Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) has been limited to doubles duty only, lost a tough three-set decision to Cornell’s Tamara John on Saturday. Stan won the first set in a tiebreaker, but was unable to take the second set, falling 6-4 and losing the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-6. Stan still leads the team with her 15-2 singles mark. Prior to Saturday’s singles loss, Stan’s last and only singles defeat was in the Princeton Invitational on September 17, 2006 to Christina Keesey of Ohio State, 6-1, 6-3.
