Bulls Split Weekend Matches

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team played two matches this past weekend at West Point and picked up a thrilling victory over the host Black Knights, 4-3. On Saturday, the Bulls lost to Temple, 5-2.

Stan Continues To Dominate

Junior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) was the lone UB player to win both of her singles matches this past weekend. Stan defeated Temple’s Anastaiisa Rukavyshnykova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 and then moved up to third singles against Army and defeated Kristin Beehler, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Stan also teamed up Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) in doubles play and went 1-1 on the weekend. Stan and Toia moved up to first doubles against Army where they picked up an 8-6 victory over Anne Houghton and Sarah Giles-Madden. Stan is currently second on the team in singles wins at 16-2.

Novaceanu Scores Match Winner

Senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) came through for the Bulls when they needed her the most this past weekend as her victory at first singles against Army clinched the match. The Bulls and Black Knights were tied at 3-3 with just the first singles match still being played. However, Novaceanu was able to score a victory over Houghton. Novaceanu lost the first set, but was able to win the final two for the 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Up Next

The Bulls head down to Florida for Spring Break where they will play matches from March 7 through March 15. Specific dates, times and opponents are still to be determined.
