ITHACA, NY – Two undefeated teams met on the tennis courts at Cornell University on Saturday with the University at Buffalo women’s tennis team fall from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 6-1 loss to the Big Red. The Bulls are now 6-1 overall while Cornell is 4-0 in dual meet play.

The Bulls picked up just one singles match victory on Saturday as freshman Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Cornell’s Elizabeth Googe, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) in the number one match. The win kept Harijanto undefeated since moving into the number one singles slot three matches ago. She improved to 13-4 in singles play and 6-1 in dual matches.

Two other singles matches went to super-tiebreakers but the Bulls dropped both contests. At number three, junior Smaranda Stan’s (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) nine-match winning streak in singles play was smapped by Tamara John, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). In the number six match, senior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) lost to Shayna Miller, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).

The Bulls head to Florida for their annual spring break trip. They face Hillsborough CC on March 12 in their next action.
