BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule on Friday with a tough 4-3 loss to visiting Bowling Green at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville, NY. The Bulls are now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in MAC play while the Falcons are 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.

The Bulls got off to a quick start in the doubles as UB's top duo of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst)

defeated Susie Schoenberger and Andrea Meister, 8-1. It was Nenova and Ortman's 12th doubles win of the season and improved their dual meet record to a perfect 6-0.

Unfortunately, UB was unable to secure the doubles point as Bowling Green shortly thereafter picked up wins at numbers two and three. At second doubles, UB's combo of Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) fell to Ashley Jakupcin and Heidi Romer, 8-4. At number three, UB's Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) were defeated by Cameron Benjamin and Jessica Johnson by an identical 8-4 score.

In singles play, the Bulls took the top three spots with the Falcons winning the bottom half and taking the match. After falling behind in the first set, 2-1, Nenova was able to defeat Schoenberger, 6-3, 6-4, at number one and remain undefeated in dual meet competition at 7-0. Ortman had little trouble knocking off Romer, 6-1, 6-0. In the most exciting match of the day, Fischer, at number three, needed three sets to defeat Benjamin, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, after trailing 3-2 in the final set.

At number four, Ugowski was defeated by Jakupcin, 6-0, 6-1. At number five, Zielinski fell to Meister, 6-0, 6-1 and at number six, Onessa Williams (Albany, NY/Albany/Mohawk Valley CC) was defeated by Johnson, 6-1, 6-4.

In an exhibition match, Wittman defeated Bowling Green's Erica Wolfe, 8-3.

The Bulls host MAC rival Ball State at the Village Glen tomorrow at 1 pm.
