Bulls Roll Past Rochester

UB women's tennis team opens spring season with 5-2 win

ROCHESTER, NY - The University at Buffalo's women's tennis team opened the spring schedule with a 5-2 win at the University of Rochester on Saturday. With the victory, the Bulls improve to 6-1 for the 2002-03 season.

The Bulls swept the doubles matches to earn the match's first point. At number one, the team of Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) scored an 8-4 win over Michelle Punj and Jill Adornetto. The number two duo of Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) defeated Tara Pojoohi and Jayni Della by an 8-5 score. UB's number three team of Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also breezed to an 8-3 win over Rochelle Stopczynski and Alex Kravis.

In the singles, UB won four of the six matches. At number two, Ortman defeated Punj in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 6-6 (7-4). Kollarova knocked off Adornetto, 6-2, 6-0, at number three. Wittman defeated Della, 6-3, 6-3, at number five and Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) downed Nell Aronoff, 6-3, 6-0, at number six. Maynard fell to Pajoohi at number one, 6-3, 6-2. At number four, Zielinski dropped a three-set decision to Kravis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Bulls open Mid-American Conference play this weekend with home matches against Western Michigan on Friday, February 28 and Northern Illinois on Saturday, March 1. Both matches will begin at 1 pm at the Village Glen Tennis Center.
