Bulls Fall to Duquesne in Spring Opener

Nenova, Ortman takes singles matches and combine for doubles win

MONROEVILLE, PA - The University at Buffalo opened the spring portion of the women's tennis schedule with a tough 4-3 loss at Duquesne on Sunday. The match was held indoors at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, PA. The Bulls are now 4-2 in dual meet competition while Duquesne remains undefeated at 6-0, including spring wins over UB and Toledo.

The Bulls picked up singles victories from their top players. First singles player Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) rolled past Katie Riedinger, 6-0, 6-1, while second singles player Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) defeated Alina Klinova, 6-2, 6-2. The duo also combined for UB's lone double win, at number one, downing Riedinger and Jackie Hughes, 8-6. Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) also scored a singles victory defeating, Ciara McDermott at number six, 6-2, 1-6 1-0 (10-8).

Duquesne picked up the doubles point with victories at number two and three. At number two, UB's Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Zielinski were defeated by Klinova and Julie Wagner, 8-2. At number three, Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) fell to Sarah Shanahan and McDermott by an 8-4 score.

All three of UB's singles losses were in straight sets. Fischer fell to Hughes, 6-4, 6-1, at number three. Onessa Williams (Albany, NY/Albany/Mohawk Valley CC) was defeated by Alicia McNamara, 6-1, 6-1, at number four. Wittman, at number five, dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Shanahan.

The Bulls host MAC rivals Bowling Green (Feb. 27) and Ball State (Feb. 28) in their next action.
