Bulls Split Weekend Road Matches

After starting with a 3-0 record in dual meet play, the Bulls suffered their first loss of the season, a 6-1 decision to Big East member Syracuse to open the weekend action on Friday. However, the Bulls (4-1) rebounded on Saturday with an impressive 7-0 win over another regional rival, Colgate.

Ortman Posts Pair of Singles Wins

Against Syracuse on Friday, UB's lone victory came at second singles as Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rolled past Catherine Zawadzki, 6-2, 6-4.

In Saturday's match against Colgate, Ortman needed a super-tiebreaker victory to defeat Alex Seaton. After taking the first set, 6-4, Ortman dropped the second set in a tiebreaker and then rallied to win the 10-point super-tiebreaker, 10-7, to clinch the victory. Ortman is 12-2 in singles play this season and holds a 5-0 record in dual-meet matches. UB's all-time leader in singles and doubles victories, she collected her 50th career singles win against Cleveland State on February 5.

Novaceanu "Double-Bagels" Raiders

Sophomore Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) did not allow a game against her Colgate opponents in UB's 7-0 victory over the Raiders on Saturday.

Playing with doubles partner Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC), in the number two slot for the first time this season, the Bulls defeated Cameron Thaney and Lil Vo, 8-0. Novaceanu, who played at third singles for the weekend, also scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lindsay Grossman. Novaceanu was ranked 28th in the East Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association following the fall season. She leads the Bulls with 14 singles wins this season and her 33 singles victories in less than two seasons, already places her on the all-time top-10 list.

Bulls Picked Third By MAC Coaches

The Mid-American Conference released its preseason poll last week with the Bulls selected third among the nine women's tennis programs this season. UB received 56 points in the poll conducted by the league's coaches. Western Michigan earned eight first-place votes and 73 total points to finish just two points ahead of Miami (OH) with 71. Miami earned one first-place vote. The Bulls open MAC play with the Broncos on March 24, the opening weekend of league action. UB meets Miami at home on April 21 in the final weekend of league competition. The MAC Tournament will be held at Miami at the end of April.
