Bulls Roll Over Syracuse

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team won its second straight dual match this past week, defeating Syracuse, 6-1, at the Village Glen Tennis Center. The Bulls took all three matches in the double portion and won five of the six singles matches. The Bulls have now defeated Syracuse two straight times.

Go Toia

Sophomore Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) had one of her best matches in a UB uniform. Toia paired up with Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) to win their doubles point, 8-3 over Syracuse’s Maria Vasilyeva and Chelsea Jones. Toia was then slotted in the fifth singles spot and defeated Syracuse’s Jacquelynn Tang in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. It was the sixth singles victory for Toia on the season and her 11th victory in doubles play, which is tops on the team.

Three Bulls Win Straight Sets

In addition to Toia, two other UB players won singles matches in straight sets. Senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) defeated Syracuse’s Christina Tan, 6-3, 6-4. Novaceanu, who is ranked 21st in the East by the ITA, has won both of her matches at first singles this spring. Also winning in straight sets was freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza), who was playing at number three. Popescu defeated Maria Vasilyeva, 6-2, 6-3. Popescu and Novaceanu were also each part of winning doubles teams. Senior Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC), won both of her matches, as did Stan. Jacob and Stan both won three-set matches.
