SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team got back into the win column with a 7-0 victory over Colgate at Syracuse’s Drumlins Tennis Center to complete a weekend split of its matches. The Bulls are now 4-1 in dual match play while the Raiders suffered their first loss of the season and are now 3-1.

UB opened the match by taking two of the three doubles contests to secure the first point. The duo of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC), playing in the number two position for the first time this season, easily knocked off Colgate’s Cameron Thaney and Lil Vo, 8-0. The Bulls clinched the point with the number three team of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) defeated Erin Fenn and Lindsay Grossman, 8-2. The only blemish to UB’s perfect day was in the number one match as the tandem of Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) fell to Jackie Couture and Alex Seaton, 8-3.

The Bulls rolled to the victory with singles wins in all six matches, highlighted by Novaceanu’s "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 win over Grossman at number three. At number one, Nenova breezed by Couture, 6-2, 6-0. Ortman needed a super-tiebreaker victory to defeat Seaton in the number two match. After taking the first set, 6-4, Ortman dropped the second set in a tiebreaker and then rallied to win the 10-point super-tiebreaker, 10-7, to clinch the victory, her second of the weekend. Ortman was UB’s lone victor in Friday’s 6-1 loss to Syracuse.

Fischer, the number four player, defeated Vo, 7-6, 6-3, while Dean, at number five, and Jacob, at number six, allowed their opponents just two games apiece in their wins for the Bulls. Dean downed Fenn, 6-0, 6-2, while Jacob knocked off Thaney, 6-2, 6-0. Playing in an eight-point pro-set exhibition match, UB’s Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economy) defeated Lauren Levy, 8-0.

The Bulls travel to Pittsburgh on February 25 to take on Duquesne in their next action.
