Bulls Dominate Syracuse, 6-1

Sophomore Diana Toia picks up wins in both singles and doubles play

BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team defeated visiting Syracuse University on Saturday afternoon, 6-1, at the Village Glen Tennis Center. The Bulls took the early doubles point and cruised through the singles matches. With the win UB improves to 2-0 on the year in its dual matches.

The Bulls won all three doubles matches as the number one team of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) defeated the Syracuse team of Christina Tan and Simone Kalhorn, 8-1. Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) took the second doubles match, 8-3, over Syracuse’s Maria Vasilyeva and Chelsea Jones, while the senior duo of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) defeated Syracuse’s Ashley Spicer and Jacquelynn Tang, 8-6.

In singles play, the Bulls won six of their seven matches as Novaceanu, Popescu and Toia all picked up straight-set victories. In fact, Toia was the first to finish as she defeated Syracuse’s Tang, 6-2, 6-0 in the fifth singles match. Novaceanu defeated Tan, 6-3, 6-4, in first singles, while Popescu, who was playing at third singles, defeated Vasilyeva, 6-2, 6-3. Stan and Jacob were both victorious in their matches as they each won three-set thrillers.

The Bulls will now travel to Princeton this upcoming weekend for their first road dual match of the year. The Bulls and Tigers will meet on Sunday, Feb. 17.
