Bulls Open Spring With Win Over Niagara

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of the schedule with an easy 7-0 victory over Niagara this past Saturday. The Bulls won every match in straight sets and didn’t allow their opponent to win more than three games in any set.

Bulls Sweep Doubles Point

The Bulls swept the doubles point against Niagara, allowing just four games combined in the three matches. The first doubles team of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) took their match over Vania Lakic and Shella Dargout, 8-0. Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) teamed up at number two to defeat Raquel Solis and Emma Cunnington, 8-3. UB’s number three team of Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) and Anna Subenkova (Riga, Latvia) took their match, 8-1.

Bulls Also Dominate Singles

The Bulls took all six of the singles matches in straight sets against Niagara. Senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Harijanto each won their singles match, 6-1, 6-0 playing at first and second singles, respectively. Popescu, who slotted in at third singles, won her match 6-2, 6-3, while Stan shut her opponent out at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jacob won her fifth singles match, 6-3, 6-2, while freshman Aleksandra Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Logos International) took her number six singles match, 6-1, 6-2.

Up Next

The Bulls will have another home match this Saturday afternoon as UB welcomes Syracuse to the Village Glen. That contest is set to start at 1:00 pm. The Bulls defeated Syracuse last season in a thriller that UB won, 4-3.
