Bulls Complete Opening Spring Weekend The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team began their spring season with a pair of 6-1 defeats this past weekend against Boston College and Brown. UB’s regionally ranked first doubles team picked up a pair of wins, while the Bulls claimed a singles match in each contest. Harijanto Impressive in Both Singles and Doubles Action Junior Denise Harijanto won three of her four matches on the weekend as she won both of her matches at doubles before splitting singles action. Harijanto, who is ranked 28th in the East by the ITA defeated Brown’s Aboubakare, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Sunday. In her first match, Harijanto lost to BC’s Lana Krasnopolsky, who is ranked 69th in the nation, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles action, Harijanto combined with sophomore Diana Popescu to win both of their matches at first doubles. Harijanto and Popescu, who are ranked fifth in the East by the ITA defeated Boston College’s Dasha Cherkasov and Lauren Cash, 8-6 and on Sunday defeated Brown’s Bianca Aboubakare and Julie Flanzer, 8-5. Harijanto and Popescu are coming off an appearance at the ITA Regionals in the Fall where they reached the semifinals.
Stan Also Picks Up Singles Victory Senior Smaranda Stan picked up a win in singles against Boston College as she defeated Dasha Cherkasov, 6-2,1-6,6-4. Stan, who played at third singles, went 1-1 in singles action on the weekend. She also played at second doubles, teaming up with Anna Subenkoa. The Bulls finally come home this weekend as they host Manhattan on Saturday, Deb. 7 at 2:00 pm. The match against the Jaspers will be at the Village Glenn Tennis Center. Manhattan has not started its spring season yet, but will face St. Bonaventure on Friday night in Olean.
