Bulls Sting Yellowjackets to Open Spring Slate

The University at Buffalo women's tennis team opened the spring portion of the schedule with 9-0 victory over the University of Rochester Sunday morning at the River Campus Sports Complex. The Bulls are now 2-0 in dual matches this season, which includes a victory over St. Francis (PA) in the fall. Because the match was played against a non-Division I opponent, all results counted individually for the 9-0 margin, instead of the usual seven-point total in Division I play.

Doubles Post Shut Outs Across the Board

All three of UB's doubles teams scored shutout victories over their Yellowjacket opponents. At number one, the UB team of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) knocked off Colleen Cross and Alexa Perry by an 8-0 count. UB's number two tandem of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) rolled past Melinda Beckmann and Jillian Grieshaber, also by an 8-0 score. The number three duo of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) also shut out their opponents, Sanjana Prabhakar and Kristen Shaw, 8-0.

All six of UB's singles matches were also won in straight sets, including a pair of "double-bagel" victories at the top two spots. Novaceanu scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cross at number one while Nenova pasted Perry by an identical score. At number three, Fischer picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Prabhakar. Ortman defeated Rochester's Jaymi Della, 6-1, 6-2, at number four. At number five, Dean knocked off Grieshaber, 6-3, 6-3. In the number six match, Jacob breezed past Beckmann, 6-3, 6-1, to complete the sweep.

Vikings Come to Town on Super Bowl Sunday

The Bulls host Cleveland State on Sunday, February 5, at 1:00 pm. The match will be at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville. In their last meeting, UB defeated the Vikings, 6-1, in Cleveland in the 2004-05 season-opener. Cleveland State is 3-3 overall in 2005-06 with matches slated this week at Akron (Feb. 2) and Niagara (Feb. 5) before they face the Bulls.
