ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2006-07 schedule with a decisive win over local rival St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bonnies, 7-0. UB is now 2-0 for the season, including a win over St. Francis (PA) in the fall.

The Bulls had little trouble with the Bonnies allowing no more than three games won by St. Bonaventure, while also scoring a pair of “double-bagel” singles wins and a shutout in doubles play.

UB took the doubles point with three victories. At number one, Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Anna Perevenzetseva and Yolande Callaghan, 8-3. The number two team of Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerstown North) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) knocked off Stephanie Fosnight and Anna Martorell by an 8-1 score. The number three duo of Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored a shutout win over Vanessa Close and Eileen Horgan, 8-0.

The singles matches turned into a rout are the Bulls rolled past the Bonnies in straight sets in all six contests. At number one, Nenova scored a victory over Perevenzetseva with a 6-2 first set win and led 3-0 when Perevenzetseva retired from the match. At number two, Dean defeated Callaghan, 6-0, 6-1 while Harijanto downed Fosnight, 6-1, 6-0. At number four, Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) ran past Martorell, 6-0, 6-1.

The number five and six matches ended up being “double-bagel” wins for the Bulls. Jacob defeated Horgan at number five while Fischer knocked off Close at number six by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

The Bulls travel to Cleveland State next Sunday for a match against the Vikings at 3:00 pm.
