Bulls Soar Past Cardinals, 143.5-99.5
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's swim team scored its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 143.5-99.5 win over visiting Ball State at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls now stand at 2-3 overall and 1-3 in MAC competition while the Cardinals are 3-2 overall, 2-2 MAC. The Bulls won nine of the 13 events on Saturday with sophomore Andrea Lehner (Lockport, NY/Orchard Park) winning three individual titles. Lehner opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 1:52.44. She then posted a season-best mark in the 100-yard freestyle touching the wall in 51.64 as the Bulls scored the top three finishers in the race. Lehner finished off the meet with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.04. Sophomore diver Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) swept the springboard competitions for the Bulls. Carpenter took the one-meter event with a six-dive total of 292.28 points and then won the three-meter competition with a total of 300.46 points.
Freshman sprinter Jessie Koltz (Chenengo Bridge, NY/Chenengo Valley) won the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight day. Koltz, who took the event in 24.69 against Eastern Michigan on Friday, lowered her season-best mark to 24.34 with Saturday's victory. Koltz knocked 12 hundredths of a second off her previous best, set on October 19 against Duquesne. Freshman distance specialist Jordan Deren (Lackawanna, NY/Nardin Academy) scored a win for the Bulls with her victory in the 500-yard freestyle. Deren won the race in 5:10.77 as the Bulls grabbed the top four spots in the race. UB also won both relay races on Saturday. UB opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay as the foursome of Jessica Ballard (Montreal, Quebec/Academic Magnet), Ashley Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport), Sam Palma (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Koltz turned in a clocking of 3:58.47. UB's 200-yard freestyle foursome also won its race in a season-best time to close out the meet. The foursome included Meghan Lafferty (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), Palma, Catherine Scharf (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Andrea Scharf (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford). The Bulls will rest during the remainder of November. They hit the water next for the three-day SummaCare Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, starting November 30. |
