Bulls Down Cornell To Close Duals

It came down to the final event as the Bulls nipped Cornell 154-144 to complete their regular season. UB is now 9-5 overall and 3-5 in Mid-American Conference competition.

Leading by just one point heading into the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, the Bulls squad of Carrie Quinlan (Amherst, NY/North Tonawanda), Carrie Armstrong (Spencerport, NY/Brockport), Tracy Cotter (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Abby Delia (Oswego, NY/Oswego) finished 24-hundreths of a second faster than the Cornell foursome to take the meet. Their winning time of 1:39.03 was their fastest in the event this season.

Quinlan and Delia were also double winners individually. Quinlan turned in a season's best performance in the 100 butterfly in 57.55 and also won the 50 freestyle in 24.81. Quinlan's mark in the 100 butterfly also improved her standing in the MAC to the third fastest, shaving a tenth of second off her previous best of 58.06.

Delia took the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 1:00.20 and 2:08.15 respectively. Also Delia was on the Bulls' winning 400 medley relay squad.

Freshman Heather Rochette (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec/Queen of Angels Academy) was another double winner for the Bulls. Rochette took the 200 butterfly in 2:11.26 and the 400 individual medley in 4:40.16.

Jolie Pun (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley) won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.80 and placed second behind Rochette in the 400 individual medley (4:43.39).

Diver Kristi Reynolds (Norwich, NY/Norwich) also turned in top season performances in the one- and three-meter competitions. Reynolds placed third in both events, collecting 220.57 points on the one-meter board and 227.25 from the three-meter board.

Up Next

With the conclusion of their dual meet regular season, the Bulls now focus on the upcoming postseason. UB hosts the Mid-American Conference Championships at Alumni Arena Natatorium February 22-24. All nine of the MAC's women's swim squads will be in action at the three-day meet. Preliminaries begin at 11:00 am each day with finals set for 7:00 p.m.
