UB Rolls Past Canisius, 204-77
The University at Buffalo did not lose a single event as the Bulls dominated Canisius 204-77 in women's swimming action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The win completes a season sweep of the Big Four as the Bulls defeated both St. Bonaventure and Niagara earlier this season.
Junior distance specialist Dawn Hickey (Brockport, NY/Brockport) led the Bulls with a pair of victories. Hickey took the 1000 freestyle in 10:37.76 and captured the 500 freestyle in 5:13.43.
Freshman Jolie Pun (Fonthill, Ont./E.L. Crossley) also won a pair of individual events. Pun won the 200 butterfly in 2:13.02 over fellow freshman Heather Rochette (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec/Queen of Angels Academy) who clocked a 2:13.38. Pun easily won the 200 backstroke in 2:12.73 and was part of the Bulls' winning 200 freestyle relay squad along with Rochette, Kristen Zimmerman (Penfield, NY/Webster) and Lisa Boettrich (Hilton, NY/Hilton) which finished in 1:45.11.
Junior breaststroker Katie English (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) swept both the 100 (1:10.60) and 200 (2:34.85) yard events.
Freshman diver Kristi Reynolds (Norwich, NY/Norwich) was victorious in both the one-meter (194.25) and three-meter (220.43) competitions. Her three-meter performance also marked her season best scoring effort.
Other winners for the Bulls included Jeni Broderick (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) in the 200 freestyle (2:00.07), Boettrich in the 100 backstroke (1:01.09), Carrie Quinlan (Amherst, NY/North Tonawanda) in the 50 freestyle (25.18), Stacey Zimmerman (Penfield, NY/Webster) in the 100 freestyle (58.81), Nicole DiCarlo (Lockport, NY/Lockport) in the 100 butterfly (1:00.15) and Melissa Schafer (DeWitt, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) in the 200 individual medley (2:18.20). Carrie Armstrong (Spencerport, NY/Brockport), English, DiCarlo and Quinlan also combined to take the 200 medley relay in 1:52.58.
"This was a good meet to get ready for the MAC competition after our successful training in Florida," said head coach Dorsi Raynolds. "It's great to get the rust off after a month away from competition."
Delia, Tapia Miss Meet
Two key members of the Bulls missed Saturday's meet against Canisius due to injuries. Sophomore sprint specialist Abby Delia (Oswego, NY/Oswego) sat out the meet with an injury. Also top breaststroker Gigi Tapia (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) was sidelined with injuries to her shoulder and knee. Both are expected to be healthy for the Bulls' next meet against Bowling Green and Ball State.
Up Next
The Bulls return to the Mid-American Conference wars next Saturday when they travel for a double-dual meet against both Ball State and Bowling Green. The meet will be held at Bowling Green. UB is at home against Toledo and Northern Illinois at 3:00 pm on January 27 following the men's meet against the Rockets and Huskies which begins at 1:00 pm.
