Lehner Sets Backstroke Mark as Bulls Fall to Toledo
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team dropped a Mid-American Conference matchup to Toledo, 202-97, Saturday afternoon at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium. With the loss, UB falls to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the MAC while the Rockets improve to 8-2 overall and remain undefeating in league action at 5-0. Highlighting UB's efforts on Saturday were a pair of wins apiece from sophomores Andrea Lehner (Lockport, NY/Orchard Park) and Sam Palma (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Lehner broke the UB record in winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.59, obliterating the old mark of 2:04.38 set by Alexandra Barerra in the 1995 season. The backstroke mark is the fourth individual record broken by Lehner, who joined the Bulls this season after competiting at Maryland last year. Lehner also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.60, holding off Toledo's Jacy Dyer, who finished second in 1:51.78.
Also picking up a pair of wins was Palma in two different disciplines. Palma led wire to wire in the 100-yard freestyle winning the race in 53.59 and holding off Toledo's Ashley Cusack who finished second by three-hundredths of a second (53.62). Palma also rolled to a victory in the 100-yard butterfly, winning the race in 57.63. Sophomore Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) won one event and came in a close second in the other diving event on Saturday. Carpenter took the three-meter competition with a six-dive total of 301.15. She finished second to Toledo's Megan McKinley by a point and a half on the one-meter board. Carpenter tallied 278.15 points to McKinley's 279.70. The Bulls travel to Niagara to face the Purple Eagles in a non-conference showdown next Saturday, January 19, at 1:00 pm. |
