Women's Swimmers Defeat Binghamton, 140-99

Bulls even record at 3-3

BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving team scored a 140-99 victory over host Binghamton University on Friday afternoon. The Bulls even their record to 3-3 with the non-conference win while the Bearcats drop to 1-5.

The Bulls won 10 of the first 11 events before exhibitioning the final pair en route to the victory as they spread individual accolades around. Seven Bulls each won single events with diver Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) sweeping both springboard competitions.

The Bulls opened the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay as the foursome of Rachel Sorg (Ottawa, Ontario/Canterbury), Ashley Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport), Jessie Koltz (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Valley) and Meghan Lafferty (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) took first place in 4:04.36.

Sorg, Koltz and Lafferty also won individual races. Sorg took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.14. Koltz and Lafferty swept the sprint freestyle events as Koltz won the 100-yard race in 55.12 and Lafferty touched first in the 50-yard contest in 25.63.

In the distance freestyle races, UB won all three events. Freshman Jordan Deren (Lackawanna, NY/Nardin) took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.74. Freshman Renae Sharkey (Fords, NJ/Metuchen) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.23. Sophomore Jessica Ballard (Montreal, Quebec/Academic Magnet) finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:41.65.

Sophomore Caitlin Reilly (Brockville, Ontario/John McCrae SS) won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.99.

Carpenter swept the women’s diving events scoring a 281.70 for her six-dive program in the one-meter event and 289.35 in the three-meter competition.

The Bulls return home to host Mid-American Conference rival Toledo on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Alumni Arena Natatorium.
