Bulls Dominate in Season Opener

Paula Listrani scores twice to lead Bulls

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team started the 1999 season in impressive fashion, defeating Niagara University 3-0 in a dominating performance. The Bulls out shot the Purple Eagles 27-4 in the game, a controlled the ball for most of the second half.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie, with UB taking 11 shots to Niagara's two. The Bulls relentless attack on the offensive side finally broke through the Purple Eagle defense, scoring the first goal at the 66:58 mark. Freshman Samantha Swerdloff (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored her first career goal on a pass from Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) to give UB the 1-0 lead.

Listrani would then score her own goal on a beautiful assist from Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) to give UB a 2-0 lead at the 85:20 mark. A few minutes later, a Niagara defender took Collins down in the box, and Listrani recorded her second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

With her two goals, Listrani now has 21 career goals and moved into 7th place in the Bulls record books. Goalie Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) recorded two saves on the game and recorded her tenth career shutout and her 15th career win on goal.

The Bulls, 1-0 on the new season, will be in action again this coming weekend when they take part in the Governor's Cup Tournament in Albany, NY. UB will face Army on Sunday, September 5, and face Albany on Monday, September 6.
