Russell Named To All-Region Team

Women's Soccer Player Earns Second Team Honors After Strong Sophomore Season

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore defender Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) of the University at Buffalo women's soccer team has been named to the 2001 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Regional Second Team, marking the fourth straight season Buffalo has had a player honored by the NSCAA.

Russell, who also earned All-MAC First Team honors at the conclusion of the season, led a Buffalo defense that held opponents to a goal or less in ten games during the 2001 campaign. Offensively, she scored twice and added an assist while starting all 18 games for the Bulls. Her first goal of the season came in a 4-1 victory over Canisius in the season opener while her second tally was the difference in a 3-1 victory over Kent State on September 16.

For her career, Russell has collected five goals and four assists for 14 points. In addition, the sophomore has started all 38 games during the past two seasons for the Bulls.

"I feel the award was well deserved," said coach Jean-A. Tassy. "She is a competitor in spirit and all business on the pitch. What really got her recognized by the coaches was her distribution and creativity with the ball which went along with her leadership."

Buffalo finished the 2001 season with a 9-9 overall mark and a 6-2 MAC record. The Bulls made their fourth straight appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament but were eliminated prematurely with a 7-0 loss at Miami on November 6. The young and talented Bulls will return 20 underclassman for the 2002 season and will lose just one senior of their 26-woman roster.

Last year, UB seniors Paula Listrani and Linnaea DiNallo both picked up NSCAA second- team honors.
