Women’s Soccer Award Winners AnnouncedBUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team handed out its end of the season awards at the team’s annual luncheon on Dec. 1 at UB’s Center for Tomorrow. Receiving awards from head coach Jean-A. Tassy and his staff were freshmen Lindsey Bailey (Burlington, ON/Assumption) and Martina Pettenuzzo (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect), juniors Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor), Nikki Wilson (El Paso, TX/Franklin) and Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer) and senior Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean).
Wilson earned the team’s Player of the Year award after keying the Buffalo defense in 2007. Wilson started all 19 games for the Bulls and added one goal and one assist for a total of three points on the season.
The team’s Most Improved player award went to Coron, who became just the second goalkeeper in UB history to record consecutive 100 save seasons. Coron finished 2007 with 128 saves, which moved her into 6th place all-time in single season saves, the most since Buffalo joined the Mid-American Conference in 1998. She also notched five shutouts while posting a .795 save percentage.
Turner and Vescio were each recipients of the Coaches’ Award, Vescio earning it for the second consecutive year. Turner finished 2007 with three goals and three assists, for a total of nine points on the season. She turned in one game winning goal and started in all 19 of the team’s games. In addition, Turner currently serves as the 2007-08 student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President.
Vescio started every game for the Bulls in 2007 while leading the team in points with 17 after scoring six goals and adding five assists. In 2007, Vescio was named to the 26-member Academic All-MAC team as well as the 2007 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I University Division Women’s Soccer Second Team. She also earned the MAC’s female scholar-athlete of the week award for the week ending Nov. 4.
Bailey and Pettenuzzo were honored as the team’s Rookies of the Year. Bailey earned a slot on the MAC’s All-Freshman team and finished tied for fourth on the Bulls in points (6), fourth on the team in scoring (2 goals) and fourth on the team in assists (2). Bailey also had one game-winning goal to help the Bulls score a 1-0 victory over Central Michigan on Oct. 21. In addition, Bailey finished the season with 22 shots, 16 on goal.
Pettenuzzo made key contributions to the Bulls’ defense in her first year, finishing the season with one goal and one assist, for three points on the season. She registered eight shots, six on goal to finish with a .750 shot on goal percentage, the highest on the team. |
