Women's Soccer Weekly Release 11/1/99

Current record - 13-4-1 (7-4-0 Mid-American Conference)

UB to Host First Round Game of MAC Tournament

With a fourth place finish in the Mid-American Conference, the UB women's soccer team has earned the right to host a first round game in the MAC Tournament. The Bulls will host fifth-seeded Ohio University on Tuesday, November 2, at 4 p.m.

This will be the first MAC Postseason contest to be held at UB. The women's soccer program also competed in UB's first ever MAC contest, winning that same game against Marshall last season. Now they will be the first UB team to host a MAC first for postseason tournament contest.

Bulls Drop Third Straight to Close out the Season

The UB women's soccer team has lost three-straight games to close out the regular season portion of their schedule. After starting the season with a 12-game unbeaten streak, the Bulls have gone 2-4 over their last six games. Ironically, UB's last win was a 2-1 victory over Ohio on Oct. 17, the same Ohio team the Bulls will host in the MAC Tournament.

UB Chasing Records

UB's current record of 13-4-1 is close to a school record. The 13 wins are the second best total in school history, trailing only the 14 wins recorded back in 1986. The Bulls 12 straight unbeaten streak to start the season set the school record for most consecutive games without a loss.

Offense Has Slowed Down

After leading the MAC most of the season in team scoring, the Bulls offense has cooled off lately. In the first 15 games, UB scored 37 goals (2.47 per game) and had 103 team points. In the last three loses, UB has been shutout in each of those three games. The last time UB was shutout in three straight games was in the 1997 season.

Unsung Heros

The Bulls success this season is due in large part to performances of players who don't get credit in the statistical catagories.

This year's defense has been a big factor in the Bulls success, anchored by junior Linnaea DiNallo. Other defenders who have contributed to shutting down opponents this year are seniors Lauren Hartmayer and Melissa Korosec, junior Cherie Rogers and freshman Soraya Sadeghi .

The midfield action has been controlled all season by the play of senior tri-captain Tara Donahue, who sets the pace of the game for the Bulls attack. Other contributors in this area are senior Dawn DelGuidice and junior Heather Collins.

Record Scorers

The Bulls scoring trio of Paula Listrani, Elizabeth Pfeffer and Samantha Swerdloff are putting themselves among the best in UB history.

Listrani and Pfeffer have become the most lethal scoring tandem in UB history. Listrani (12) and Pfeffer (10) have a combined 22 goals, more than any other pair in UB history. They are also just the second pair to reach 10 or more goals in the same season.

Swerdloff has recorded eight goals on the year, giving this trio a combined 30 goals on the season. The only other trio to score more was back in 1987 when Nora Bender (17), Michel Major (9) and Roma Marracino (8) combined for 34 goals.

Record Scorers - Part 2

The Bulls offensive triple-threat combination is also on the verge of becoming one of UB's best in terms of point production. Paula Listrani (34), Elizabeth Pfeffer (22) and Samantha Swerdloff (20) have all eclipsed the 20-point mark in the same season, just the third time in school history that has happened.

Their combined total of 76 points is just three points behind the best ever scoring trio in UB history that recorded 79 points amongst three players back in 1986.

Assault on the Records

Junior Paula Listrani is moving up the UB record books. With her 12 goals this year, she now has 31 career goals, putting her in fifth place. She has also recorded 75 points in her career, placing her fourth in career points.

Another junior, goalkeeper Jaime Adams, is making her mark in the record books as well. Adams is ranked third in career saves with 299 and moved into the top spot in career wins with 26.

MAC Standings

Eastern Michigan won the MAC regular season championship with a conference mark of 8-1-2. Central Michigan was second at 8-3-0, Miami was third at 8-3-0 and Buffalo fourth at 7-4-0.

UB has the third best overall record at 13-4-1. Miami is 15-3-0 overall and EMU is 15-3-2 overall.
