Women's Soccer Falls To Miami In MAC Tournament Quarterfinals

Bulls Finish 2001 Season With 9-9 Record

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team was defeated by Miami, OH, 7-0 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Buffalo, the sixth seed in the tournament, finishes the season with a 9-9-0 record overall, falling one win short of double digit victories for the first time since the 1997 season. Miami, the third seed, advances to the semifinals and will play either Eastern Michigan or Western Michigan on Friday, November 9.

The Bulls, who hadn't played a game since their regular season finale 13 days ago on October 24, played to a 0-0 tie at the half before the RedHawks erupted for seven second-half goals. Miami tallied its first goal two minutes into the second half, then followed with a second goal in the 58th minute before busting the game open with five goals in the final 28:17.

"Our youth showed today," said head coach Jean Tassy. "We played with Miami for a half, and we did some positive things out there. We are looking forward to the future, our goal is the NCAAs."

Junior Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) started in goal for the 17th time this season and stopped eight Miami shots. Offensively, the Bulls managed just five shots, with just two of those shots testing the Miami goalkeeper. The RedHawks had a season-high 23 shots with nine players recording at least one in the game.

The seven goals in a single game are the most Buffalo has given up since a 7-0 loss at Penn State on September 29, 1995 during Jean Tassy's first season as head coach at Buffalo.

The MAC Tournament apparance was the fourth straight for the Bulls. Buffalo is now 2-4 in the post-season tournament and has fallen to Miami in its last two post-season matches. Last year, Buffalo was eliminated by Miami, 2-1, in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament played at Buffalo.
