Buffalo Falls to Miami in Semifinals

The University at Buffalo women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Miami in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament. Danielle Berkemeier scored the first Miami goal shortly after the start of the second half. After Buffalo goalkeeper Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) blocked a penalty kick by Andrea Cunningham, the Bulls had a couple of chances to tie the score. The closest was a shot by Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) that went off the top crossbar. The RedHawks would add a second goal in the 77th minute to secure the win.

Pfeffer, Olszewski Named to All-Tournament Team

Two UB players were named to the Mid-American Conference All-Tournament team this past weekend. Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) and freshman forward Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) were both selected to the 11-player squad. The Bulls defeated Toledo 2-0 in the quarterfinals before being ousted by Miami 2-0 in the semifinals.

Tassy Named MAC Coach of the Year

UB's Jean-A. Tassy recorded a first in UB history, becoming the first Buffalo coach to receive MAC Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Bulls to the MAC regular season title. The women's soccer program was the first UB school to win a MAC title, finishing with an 8-2-1 league record. Tassy is in his sixth season with the Bulls and has compiled a 59-40-11 record, including three straight winning seasons. This year, his squad tied the school record with 14 wins.

Three Bulls Named to All-MAC First Team, One Named to Second Team

UB had three players named to the All-MAC First Team as named by the conference office. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) were both named first team all-conference players for the second straight season. Listrani scored a personal-best 14 goals this year and set school single season records with 11 assists and 39 points on the year. DiNallo was a key component to the UB defense that had a 0.97 team goals against average and recorded nine shut outs on the year. Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) was also named to the All-MAC First Team after being named a second team all-conference selection last year. Pfeffer recorded four goals and three assists for 11 points on the season. In addition to those three players, Cherie Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Rogers was another key defensive player for the Bulls this season and had one goal and an assist on the year.

Bulls Tie School Win Mark

UB tied the school record for wins in a season with the MAC quarterfinal victory over Toledo. The Bulls ended the season with 14 wins to tie the record set back in the 1986 season. This year was the third consecutive season the UB women's soccer team reached double digits in wins. The Bulls finished at 14-6-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the MAC. In 1998, UB finished 10-6-2 and last season finished at 13-5-1, for a combined 37-17-4 record over the past three seasons.

UB Scoring Comes From Every Direction

The Bulls spread out the team scoring this season as Buffalo scored 45 goals on the year, 44 by UB players and one own goal. Those 44 goals were scored by 14 different players. Paula Listrani led the way with 14 goals. Nicole Olszewski had six goals, Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) had five goals and Elizabeth Pfeffer had four goals on the year. Two UB players had three goals each, one player had two and seven players each scored once this season. In addition, 12 different players recorded assists this year. Listrani led the team with 11 and Olszewski had seven assists.
