The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team scored a lopsided victory over Kent State on Thursday night, defeating the Golden Flashes 3-0 in Buffalo. Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer) scored two goals, while Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) added one goal on the night. Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/A.N. Myer) inked two assists and UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) grabbed her fifth shutout of the season.
Vescio, Griffiths Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District Team Junior Andrea Vescio and senior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) were both named to the 2007 College Sports Information Director’s of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I University Division Women’s Soccer Second Team on Thursday. Griffiths is a two-time honoree, as she was recognized in 2006 while the honor is the first for Vescio.
Vescio is a Management major, carrying a 3.99 GPA. Vescio started every game this season and finished first on the team in points (17) and goals (6). Griffiths, meanwhile, is a Biological Sciences major, carrying a 3.99 GPA. Despite an injury-plagued season, the senior scored four goals and added an assist in 2007 despite playing in just seven games this season. Coron Turns In Career Numbers In 2007
This season, junior goalkeeper Amy Coron became just the second goalkeeper in UB history to record consecutive 100 save seasons. Coron collected seven saves against Kent State on Thursday, bringing her season total to 128 saves, which moved her into 6th place all-time in single season saves, the most since Buffalo joined the Mid-American Conference in 1998. Brooke McCalla wrapped up an excellent season for the Bulls in 2007, as the junior continued to establish herself as a versatile and dominant playmaker on the attack and in the midfield. After starting all 19 games for the Bulls this season, McCalla finished as the team leader in assists (6), second on the team in points (14) and second on the team in goals (4). End Of An Era
Buffalo head coach Jean-A. Tassy was sent into retirement with a win on Thursday, as the long-time head coach coached in the final game of his 13-year career with the Bulls’ women’s soccer team. Tassy concluded his tenure with the UB women with a record of 113-107-21.
