Miami Claims MAC Women's Soccer Tournament Title with OT win

Danielle Berkemeier scores in second overtime period

BUFFALO, NY - A goal by sophomore Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) just under seven minutes into the second overtime period pushed the Miami (OH) RedHawks to a 1-0 win over Bowling Green in the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, held at the University at Buffalo. With the win, the fourth-seeded RedHawks (11-7-0 overall) receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Seventh-seeded Bowling Green (10-10-1) played Miami evenly in the first half before the RedHawks took control in the second, outshooting the Falcons by a 10-1 margin. Bowling Green goalkeeper Erika Flanders (Mason, OH/Mason) kept the score tied at 0-0 with some outstanding saves, finishing with a total of 10 stops on the afternoon. After a scoreless first sudden-death, 15-minute overtime period, Miami sophomore Katie Milligan (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) threaded a pass through the Bowling Green defense to Berkemeier who slipped the ball past Flanders for the game-winning goal.

Berkemeier and Milligan were both chosen to the All-Tournament Team, along with Miami's Maggie Lyon (Cincinnati, OH/St. Ursula Academy) and Laura Degelleke (Barrington, IL/North Barrington). Bowling Green was represented by Flanders, Beth Wechsler (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) and Stephanie Heller (Loveland, OH/Milford). Buffalo and Western Michigan, both eliminated in the semifinals on Friday, had two players apiece chosen to the All-Tournament Team. Buffalo placed Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero N. Syracuse) and Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Western Michigan placed Kathryn Link (Burlington, Ontario/Notre Dame HS) and Kelly Thack (Troy, MI/Athens) on the All-Tournament Team.
