UB Women's Soccer Upset in MAC Tournament Semifinals

Bulls lose to Miami, 2-0

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team saw its hopes of winning a Mid-American Conference Championship come to an end with a 2-0 loss to visiting Miami (OH) in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament at UB's RAC Field. The Bulls (14-6-1 overall) came into the game as the tournament's top seed after winning the MAC's regular season title, and they advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 win over Toledo in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday. Miami (10-7-0), the tournament's fourth seed, advances to Sunday's championship game against seventh-seeded Bowling Green.

The Bulls controlled play early on in a scoreless first half, recording the first six shots of the game. An injury to senior sweeper Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) midway through the first half changed the flow of the game, and Buffalo goalkeeper Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was forced to stop four Miami shots before the end of the half to keep the game tied at 0-0 at halftime. The RedHawks quickly took control in the second half with Danielle Berkemeier scoring on a breakaway to snap the scoreless tie at the 48:12 mark. Just over three minutes later, Cox saved a penalty kick by Miami's Andrea Cunningham, and the stop seemed to give the Bulls some momentum back. Freshman Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) had Buffalo's best chance of the half when she rifled a shot off the crossbar in the 63rd minute of play. Miami's Katie Milligan lofted a high shot over Cox's outstretched hand for an unassisted insurance goal at the 76:39 mark.

Buffalo outshot the RedHawks by a 17-11 margin and also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cox finished with six saves, as did Miami keeper Laura Degelleke.
