Women's Soccer Wins 2-0, Advances to Semifinals

Bulls to Host Conference Finals

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo women's soccer team came out quickly and made their presence felt early on, scoring in the first two minutes of the game and controlling throughout as they defeated Toledo 2-0 in MAC Tournament quarterfinal action. With the win, UB advances to the semifinals and has earned the right to host the MAC semifinals and finals this upcoming weekend.

The Bulls got on the board early, as Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) dumped the ball off to Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) who knocked it just inside the left post for a 1-0 UB lead at the 1:21 mark. A short time later, Listrani would score her own goal, this one off an assist from Devon Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) that got by the Toledo goalkeeper on the far post for a 2-0 Bulls' lead at the 17:33 mark. That two-goal lead was more than enough for the UB defense, which limited the Rockets to just seven shots in the game.

A key for Buffalo all year, the defense again stepped up as Toledo managed few shots inside the box. Goalkeeper Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) recorded five saves in the game and recorded her fifth shutout of the season, and it was UB's ninth shutout as a team. The nine team shutouts in a season ties a school-record for most in one year. The Bulls improve to 14-5-1 on the season, and the 14 wins match the school-record for most wins in a season, a mark set back in 1986.

"I think the girls are starting to see the rewards of their hard work by hosting the conference tournament and having a chance to play for the MAC championship," said UB head coach Jean-A. Tassy. "It will be nice to host to not have to worry about travel and being able to sleep in your own bed, but we just have to stay focused and play like we have all year."

The Bulls now advance to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament and will serve as the host for the semifinals and finals. Buffalo will face Miami-OH, a 1-0 winner over Ohio earlier today, in the semifinal round. That game is scheduled for a 5 pm start on Friday, November, 3. The other semifinal game will feature Bowling Green against Western Michigan, with that game starting at 12:15 pm. The conference championship game will be held on Sunday, November 5, at 11 am.
