Calvert Has Milestone Night as Bulls Tie Golden Flashes
BUFFALO, NY - Senior goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) made six saves to become the first goalkeeper in the University at Buffalo's women's soccer team's 24-year history to reach 100 saves in consecutive seasons as she pitched her second straight shutout, helping Buffalo wrap up a 0-0 tie on Senior Day against Kent State in Mid-American Conference action Friday night at UB Stadium. While Buffalo (5-11-1 overall, 3-7-1 MAC) fell out of playoff contention with its 1-0 loss to Akron last Friday, the tie did little to help Kent State (8-8-3 overall, 5-4-2 MAC) in its playoff seeding. With a win, the Golden Flashes would have earned a fourth-seed and an MAC quarterfinal home match Tuesday. Instead, the Flashes will have to travel to regionally-ranked Ball State, seeded second in the tournament. Calvert, who finishes her career with 14 shutouts, reached the 100-save mark during a four-save first half. Her fifth save, which tied Jaime Adams' (1997-2000) mark of 340 career saves, came with three minutes left in regulation, as Catharine Marosszeky dribbled inside the goal box and fired a shot to the lower right corner of the goal. Calvert sprawled out and knocked the ball wide of the net to tie Adams' for second on the all-time list. Calvert took second place in career saves at UB with two minutes remaining in the first overtime, as Jen Frey was delivered a cross inside the box, but Calvert slid in front of Frey, knocking the shot of a Kent State player before it was safely cleared away. Buffalo and Kent State matched each other with 12 shots, but Kent State took all seven corners in the game and were called for four more fouls. Kent State keeper Kristen Nelson also made six saves, as sophomores Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) combined for seven shots.
The game was the last in the careers of six UB seniors, as Calvert, Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), Arielle Korczykowski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Erica Mincher (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa), Pamela Schneck (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) and Lindsay Szafranski (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) were honored in a ceremony before the game. Crofut, Buffalo's leading scorer with eight points this season who has sat out the last six games after an ACL injury, was given the start Friday night. On the first play of the game, Turner tapped the ball to Crofut at the center of the field, who kicked the ball out of bounds before being replaced. Buffalo has not lost a Senior Day game since 1999, when it lost to Kent State, 1-0, in a
double overtime game. Since, the Bulls have posted a 5-0-1 mark. |
