Women’s Soccer Scores Huge 1-0 Victory Over Ball St.

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team notched a sensational 1-0 victory over the Ball State Cardinals on Friday afternoon inside of UB Stadium.

The Bulls used an early first half goal off the foot of sophomore Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) to score the Mid-American Conference win over BSU, a team that entered the match undefeated in the MAC and ranked No. 14 in the Great Lakes Region, according to SoccerBuzz.com.

Buffalo got off to a speedy start, getting on the scoreboard first as Higgins scored her third goal of the season at the 5:30 mark. The sophomore found the back of the net from 25-yards out on a one-touch shot off a pass from junior Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton). The assist was McCalla’s fourth of the season.

The Bulls then played solid defense for the next 85 minutes, as a young group of Buffalo defenders lead by Nikki Wilson (El Paso, TX/Franklin), Mandi Courteau (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris), Martina Pettenuzzo (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect), Kristen Bailey (Burlington, ON/Assumption), Jennifer Mihok (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) and Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) made a handful of important stops against a potent Ball State offense. UB also successfully prevented BSU from converting on its 10 cornerkick opportunities, including seven in the second half.

The tenacious Bulls’ offense, keyed by McCalla, Higgins, Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer), Lindsey Bailey (Burlington, ON/Assumption) and Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) fired 12 shots during the contest and displayed a heightened physical style of play, drawing 20 fouls on the afternoon.

UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) finished the match with eight saves to earn her second consecutive shutout of the season.

The Bulls return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 for a 1:00 pm MAC match against Miami. Buffalo will also recognize the efforts of this year’s senior class on Sunday, as Patty Allen (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili), Allison Bosch (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), Courteau, Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem), Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence), MacVie, Samantha Roth (Rochester, NY/Arcadia), Geenamarie Ruggiero (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), Turner and Kara Winch (Strykersville, NY/Holland Central) will all dress for the second-to-last match of their careers.
