Bulls Blanked By Golden Flashes, 3-0KENT, OH- The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team ended its season this afternoon, dropping its final Mid-American Conference contest on the road to the Kent State Golden Flashes, 3-0. A victory would have guaranteed UB an appearance in the 2006 MAC Championships, while a setback required a bit of help from league foes, which did not occur.
Entering the game, the Bulls owned the eighth and final qualifying spot in the league playoffs. With only the top eight teams in the 12 team league qualifying for the league tournament and because of its setback to Kent State, Buffalo needed a victory by No. 9 Akron over No. 3 Ohio University and win by 12th place Western Michigan over 10th place Northern Illinois. Because neither needed win occured, the Bulls saw their playoff hopes hindered. Additionally, because of the inclement weather that caused the cancellation of the contest between Toledo and Buffalo at UB Stadium on October 15, the final league standings will be determined by winning percentage, rather than total wins and losses.
Kent State got on the board early, notching its first goal just 53 seconds into the contest. Kimberly Dimitroff beat the Bulls’ defense and sent a shot over the right shoulder of Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 edge. Kent State created a two-goal deficit at the 18:02 mark, when Brittany Fracasso nailed a cross from Lisa Kurz between the pipes. Down two at the half, the Bulls were never able to mount a comeback, as the Golden Flashes extended their lead in the 65th minute when Kurz roped an unassisted shot from the top of the box to give KSU the 3-0 advatage.
Coron finished the afternoon with six saves, while Alicia Fernandez collected six saves for the Golden Flashes. Sophomores Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Onatrio/A.N. Myer) and Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) ended the afternoon with three shots each, two on goal, while junior Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) finished with one shot on goal.
The Bulls finish the regular 2006 season with a 8-10-0 overall record and a 4-6-0 record in the MAC. Vescio was the leading goal-scorer for Buffalo, registering six goals this season. The sophomore also tallied one assist and finished with 13 points. Junior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) led UB in total points, inking 14 points on five goals and four assists. McCalla led the Bulls in assists, dishing out six on the season and scoring three goals to total 12 points.
