BUFFALO, NY Senior Arielle Korczykowski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into the second half, as the University at Buffalo women's soccer team defeated Cornell, 2-1, in non-conference action at RAC Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Korczykowski earned the goal after a throw-in by freshman Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) found junior Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) a few yards from the right side of the goal. Crofut headed the ball out, where Korczykowski kicked it in.

Korczykowski has closed the year on a hot streak after sitting out seven games due to injury, she has accumulated two goals and an assist in her last three games. With her goal, Korczykowski became the third UB player to cross 10 points on the season.

Cornell (5-8-2 overall) got on the board in the fifth minute when Emily Wyffels stole the ball from a UB defender near the end line, dribbled to five yards out and let loose a shot that sailed into the upper right corner of the net.

Crofut answered 25 minutes later, when she launched a direct kick from 25 yards out into the upper right corner, past a leaping effort from Cornell goalkeeper Katie Thomas.

Crofut finishes the regular season with a team-leading seven goals. She scored all seven goals in the last 13 games, after going without a goal in the team's first six contests.

Cornell had a shot to take the lead early in the second half when Natalie Dew rocketed a shot from 25 yards over a screen of players that kept the ball hidden from Buffalo keeper Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams). Calvert made a diving save just inside the left crossbar, however, to keep the tie.

With 12 minutes remaining a Cornell's Whitney Hughes headed a ball off the crossbar, but a UB defender cleared the ball on the rebound.

Thomas stopped eight shots for the Big Red and Calvert made five saves for Buffalo. Calvert finished the year with 121 saves, three more than she had earned during her first two years as a starter combined.

The Bulls (7-11-1) now must wait to see if they will make the Mid-American Conference playoffs. If Bowling Green and Toledo tie during their matchup on Thursday, Buffalo will keep its eighth playoff slot. However, if their is a winner of the Bowling Green/Toledo game, the winner will take the eighth slot.
