Weekly Release 10/25/99

Current record - 13-3-1 (7-3-0 Mid-American Conference)

UB to End Season at Home

The Bulls will close out their regular season this weekend when they host Kent on Saturday, October 30, at 1 p.m. The Bulls have clinched a spot in the MAC Tournament and are guaranteed a finish of fourth or higher, meaning UB will host a first round game of the MAC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The opponent for that game will be determined by outcomes this weekend.

Bulls Drop Two on the Road

The UB women's soccer team lost twice this past week, falling to Eastern Michigan and MAC leader Central Michigan, both on the road. It was the first time UB lost two straight since the end of the 1997 season.

UB Chasing Records

UB's current record of 13-3-1 is close to some school records. The 13 wins are the second best total in school history, trailing only the 14 wins recorded back in 1986. The Bulls 12 straight unbeaten games to start the season set the school record for most consecutive games without a loss.

Unsung Heros

The Bulls success this season is due in large part to performances of players who don't get credit in the statistical catagories.

This year's defense has been a big factor in the Bulls success, anchored by junior Linnaea DiNallo. Other defenders who have contributed to shutting down oppoenents this year are seniors Lauren Hartmayer and Melissa Korosec, junior Cherie Rogers and freshman Soraya Sadeghi .

The midfield action has been controlled all season by the play of senior tri-captain Tara Donahue, who sets the pace of the game for the Bulls attack. Other contributors in this area are senior Dawn DelGuidice and junior Heather Collins.

Record Scorers

The Bulls scoring trio of Paula Listrani, Elizabeth Pfeffer and Samantha Swerdloff are putting themselves among the best in UB history.

Listrani and Pfeffer have become the most lethal scoring tandem in UB history. Listrani (12) and Pfeffer (10) have a combined 22 goals, more than any other pair in UB history. They are also just the second pair to reach 10 or more goals in the same season.

Swerdloff has recorded eight goals on the year, giving this trio a combined 30 goals on the season. The only other trio to score more was back in 1987 when Nora Bender (17), Michel Major (9) and Roma Marracino (8) combined for 34 goals.

Record Scorers - Part 2

The Bulls offensive triple-threat combination is also on the verge of becoming one of UB's best in terms of point production. Paula Listrani (34), Elizabeth Pfeffer (22) and Samantha Swerdloff (20) have all eclipsed the 20-point mark in the same season, just the third time in school history that has happened.

Their combined total of 76 points is just three points behind the best ever scoring trio in UB history that recorded 79 points amongst three players back in 1986.

Pfeffer Provides the Offense

Elizabeth Pfeffer provided the scoring punch for the Bulls this past weekend. Pfeffer scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Marshall, including the overtime game winner.

At Ohio, Pfeffer scored a goal shortly before the half to tie the game and added the game winner in the second half, recording all four goals for the Bulls and helped the team record two victories.

Assault on the Records

Junior Paula Listrani is moving up the UB record books. With her 12 goals this year, she now has 31 career goals, putting her in fifth place. She has also recorded 75 points in her career, placing her fourth in career points.

Another junior, goalkeeper Jaime Adams, is making her mark in the record books as well. Adams is ranked third in career saves with 292 and moved into the top spot in career wins with 26.

MAC Standings

Central Michigan currently leads the MAC with an 8-2 conference record. Eastern Michigan is second at 7-1-2 and UB is tied with Miami for third at 7-3-0.
