Women's Soccer Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Bulls Finish Week 2-1 The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team finished the week with a duo of wins, while sporting a .500 record in Mid-American Conference action. After posting a 3-0 shutout against non-league foe Cornell on Wednesday at home, the Bulls hit the road hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive and returned with a split. Bulls Charge Past Zips
After battling through a scoreless first half, the Bulls’ offense exploded for a couplet of second-half scores to down Akron, 2-1. Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to get UB on the board at the 56:48 mark after collecting a pass from sophomore Jenessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park). The Bulls struck again almost 12 minutes later, when junior Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) headed the ball into an open net to score her first goal of the season and to extend the Buffalo lead to two. Bobcats Best Bulls
Buffalo stumbled on Sunday afternoon, falling to Ohio University, 3-1. Junior Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) headed a pass from Fage past the Ohio goalkeeper in the 70th minute of the contest to get the Bulls on the board. Griffiths’ goal gave her a team-leading 14 points on the season, which includes a well-rounded five goals and four assists, both ranking second on the squad. UB Still Superior On Senior Day
Wednesday night’s 3-0 victory over Cornell marked the final home game for UB seniors Jessica Roesch (Centennial, CO/Grandview) and Lindsay Guarino (Derby, NY/Lake Shore Central). Buffalo has not lost a Senior Day game since 1999, when it lost to Kent State, 1-0, in a double overtime game. Since then, the Bulls have posted a 6-0-1 mark. Up Next The Bulls will play their final MAC game on Thursday, October 26 at Kent State. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm. It is a must-win situation for Buffalo, as the team will seal the deal for a spot in the top-eight in the league and an appearance in the 2006 MAC Tournament. The Golden Flashes currently hold down the sixth-place slot in the twelve team field. Should the Bulls lose to Kent State on Thursday, there is still a chance that the team will see post-season action as long as third-place Ohio beats ninth-place Akron and last place Western Michigan beats tenth-place Northern Illinois. |
