Bulls Charge Past Zips, 2-1AKRON, OH- The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team kept its Mid-American Conference post-season hopes alive Friday night, downing the Akron Zips 2-1 in an important road victory.
Sophomore Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season and junior Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) sent another one through the pipes to help the Bulls claim an important victory on the road. Buffalo evened its record at 4-4 in the MAC and 8-8 overall, while Akron fell to 3-6 in the league and 10-6 overall.
After battling through a scoreless first half, the Bulls’ offense exploded for a duo of second-half scores. Vescio got UB on the board at the 56:48 mark after collecting a pass from sophomore Jenessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park). The Bulls struck again almost 12 minutes later, when Fage headed the ball into an open net to score her first goal of the season and to extend the Buffalo lead to two.
With just over three minutes remaining in the contest, the Zips got on the board when Christine Vacha snuck a pass from Jessica Vix past UB goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor). Coron tallied five saves on the night, while Akron goalkeeper Krystin Wilson stopped four Buffalo shots. The Bulls return to action to keep their MAC post-season hopes alive on Sunday when they take the field against Ohio in Athens. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm. |
