Women's Soccer Ties Bowling Green

Bulls Finish in Deadlock, Retain First in the MAC

BUFFALO, NY — The UB women's soccer team is in control of their own destiny in the hunt for the MAC regular season title after 1-1 tie with Bowling Green on Friday night. The Bulls had some missed opportunities in the double overtime game, but with a Miami loss earlier in the evening, UB stays in first place in the MAC standings.

The two teams were even in the first half, as neither goalie would give to the pressure. The Falcons had a close chance late in the first half as a shot by Janice Mentrup hit off the left post less than a minute before the end of the half. All the scoring in the game came in three-minute span late in the second half, with Bowling Green finding the net first.

Michelle Lisy took an errant pass and shot it past UB goalie Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) for a 1-0 Falcons lead in the 80th minute. Buffalo came back quickly as Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) got the ball in the middle of the box and passed to the left side where Elizabeth Pfeffer (Liverpool, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) hit a shot from a tough angle and found the net. That goal tied the game at 1-1 at the 82:12 mark.

Both teams had chances to score in the overtime periods. Bowling Green had the best chance in the second overtime period but Cox made a tremendous save just in front of the goal line for the Bulls to help preserve the 1-1 tie.

Buffalo is now 11-5-1 overall and is 7-2-1 in the conference while Bowling Green is 7-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the MAC. With the tie and the Miami loss to Eastern Michigan, the Bulls are in sole possesion of first place in the Mid-American Conference. UB will finish their MAC schedule Sunday when they host Toledo at 11 am. A win by UB will assure the Bulls of a number one seed in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament.
