Nearing Another Milestone Senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) is 11 saves away from becoming the first goaltender in the University at Buffalo's women's soccer team's 24-year history to make 100 saves in back-to-back seasons. The keeper has made nine or more saves five times in her career, with a career-high 13-save performance in Buffalo's 2-0 win against Sunday's opponent, Ohio, on Oct. 24, 2004.
Hurting Buffalo is without five of its preseason projected starters, as freshman Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) and sophomore Amanda Courteau (St. Catharines, Ontario/Denis Moris) were injured this week. The Bulls have lost their leading scorer, Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois), and 2004 Freshmen All-MAC defender Courtney MacVie (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) is also out of the lineup. Crofut, one of only 27 players in conference history to reach 50 career points, finished the season with eight points, just two shy of becoming the first player since all-time leading scorer Paula Listrani (1997-2000) to reach 10 points in all four seasons at UB. Sophomore Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and sophomore Kara Winch (Strykersville, NY/Holland Central) have also been forced out with injuries.
Senior defender Pamela Schneck (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) made her first start of the season Sunday against Bowling Green. It was Schneck's first appearance in the starting 11 since the season finale last year, when Buffalo beat Cornell, 2-1, on Oct. 26, 2004. Before that, Schneck had started 38 of the previous 39 games. Senior midfielder Erica Mincher (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) was also brought back into the starting lineup Sunday after coming off the bench as a top reserve for the previous six games.
On the Line With three games remaining, the Bulls are in 10th place in the
12-team conference, needing to leapfrog two teams in order to make the
conference playoffs. Luckily, the Bulls have two crucial factors on their side,
despite their injuries and their need to win all three games. First, all three
games will be at UB Stadium, where Buffalo won both of their conference
games. Second, the Bulls will be facing three teams in the lower half of the
conference standings, as they host 11th-place Akron (3-10-2, 1-6-1 MAC) and
12th-place Ohio (3-11, 1-7 MAC) this weekend before facing seventh-place
Kent State (6-8-2, 3-4-1 MAC) next Friday. |
