Women's Soccer Weekly ReleaseBulls Win One, Lose One UB suffered a tough loss at Miami, falling 2-1 last Friday. That loss dropped UB into a tie for first place in the MAC with Miami. Buffalo then rebounded to record a 2-0 win at Ball State and stay in a tie for first with the RedHawks at 7-2-0 in the conference. Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored the lone goal in the loss to Miami, and she scored a goal and had an assist in the 2-1 win at Ball State. Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored the second UB goal against the Cardinals to help secure the win and keep the Bulls atop the MAC standings.
Listrani Sets Another School Record With two goals and an assist this past weekend, Paula Listrani has continued her assault on the UB record books. She now has 44 career goals, passing Nora Bender for the career record. Listrani also has 108 points on her career, which is also a UB school record. Listrani becomes just the second women's player in UB history, and third soccer player, man or woman, to go over the 100-point mark for a career. In addition, Listrani is also second all-time in career assists with 20, three behind the top spot.
Bulls Defense Registers Seventh Shutout The Bulls defense has been the main ingredient in the team's success this season as UB has held its opponents scoreless in five of the last seven games. Buffalo recored its seventh shutout as a team with a 2-0 win at Ball State this past weekend. Goalkeeper Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) has recorded four shutouts and Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) has recorded three, and both have had the help of the usual supporting cast in the back. Both Heather Collins and Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) have seen time at the sweeper position lately. Cherie Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Erin McGarry (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) have both played in the back as well and have both started in every game this year, and Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) has played tough on the defensive side.
Bulls Reach Double Digit Wins for Third-Straight Year For the third consecutive season, the UB women's soccer team has reached double digits in wins. The Bulls are currently 11-5-0 overall and 7-2-0 in the MAC. In 1998, UB finished 10-6-2 and last season finished at 13-5-1, for a combined 34-16-3 record over the past three seasons. The school record for wins in a season is 14, set back in 1986. The Bulls still have three regular season games remaining in addition to postseason games.
UB Scoring Comes From Every Direction The Bulls have spread out the scoring this season as Buffalo has scored 37 goals on the year, 36 by UB players and one own goal. Those 36 goals have been scored by 12 different players. Paula Listrani leads the way with 12 goals, and Emily Russell and Nicole Olszewski have five goals each on the year. Two UB players have three goals each, one player has two and six players have each scored once this season. In addition, 11 different players have recorded assists this year. Listrani leads the team with seven and Olszewski has five assists.
Upcoming Action... The Bulls will be home again this weekend to wrap up the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule. UB will face Bowling Green on Friday, October 20, at 4 pm, and then host Toledo on Sunday, October 22, at 11am. The game against Toledo will be Senior Day for UB where all six seniors will be recognized before the game. The Bulls need to win both conference games and have Miami lose one of its two remaining conference games to secure the regular season championship.
