Stephanie Velez and Amy Coron Sweep Weekly MAC Honors Velez earns offensive award, Coron earns
defensive award after Bulls go 2-0 on the weekend
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo freshman forward Stephanie Velez and senior goalkeeper Amy Coron earned this week's Mid-American Conference Offensive and Defensive Women’s Soccer Player of the Week Awards based on their performances against MAC rivals Western Michigan and Northern Illinois this past weekend. The women’s soccer team went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating Western Michigan, 2-1, on Friday night and shutting out Northern Illinois, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The weekend wins are the Bulls’ first in Mid-American Conference play as they improve to 3-10-1 (2-3-1 MAC).
Velez scored three goals for six points, netting one goal in the win over Western Michigan and scoring both UB goals in the shutout against Northern Illinois. Velez leads the Bulls with four goals, three of which were scored last weekend, and nine points for the season. Coron made 18 saves in net for the Bulls -- 10 in the game against Western Michigan and eight against Northern Illinois. The 2-0 win over Northern Illinois gave Coron her second shutout of the season as she finished the weekend with a 0.50 GAA and a save percentage of .947, allowing only one goal. Coron is now just eight saves away from taking over the number one spot on UB’s all-time career saves list. “Amy and Stephanie came out and had a great weekend,” said head coach Michael Thomas. “Amy has been a rock for the team all year so it’s nice to see her get some recognition. Stephanie has been so close to breaking through and it’s nice to see her come through and have a great weekend.”
The Bulls will take a road trip next weekend, travelling to Toledo on Friday, October 16 for a 4:00 pm game, followed by a match up at Bowling Green on Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 pm.
