Bulls Earn First Conference Win Over Western Michigan

The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team captured their first Mid-American Conference victory of the season by defeating Western Michigan, 2-1 on Friday night at UB Stadium. The Bulls attacked early by scoring two goals in the first fifteen minutes of play to secure the win. In the fourth minute of play, freshman

Katie Kerr found fellow freshman Stephanie Velez, who scored the first goal of the game to put the Bulls up by one.

UB extended their lead in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a Western Michigan foul. Lindsey Bailey scored her first goal of the season off a 23-yard blast, which prevailed as the game winning goal. WMU cut the Bulls lead with a goal in the 59th minute but UB hung on for the win. Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron had ten saves in the match.

Velez Nets Two Goals As Bulls Blank Northern Illinois

The Bulls shutout Northern Illinois, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon, with Velez scoring both Buffalo goals to give UB their second win of the weekend. Velez scored her first goal of the game at the 6:24 mark to give for an early lead. Angela Nicholas belted the ball off a free kick and Velez caught the NIU goalkeeper out of the net to sneak in the goal.

The second half started out much like the first with Velez netting an early goal. Less than a minute into the half, Velez took a short pass from Aubrey Stahl and broke away from the NIU defense. Unmarked in front of the net, Velez beat the Huskies goalkeeper to notch her second goal of the game and third of the weekend at the 46:08 mark of the match.

The Huskies had their chances, but were stopped short by the UB defense. Lauren Crawford blocked a shot from an NIU attacker that otherwise would have gone in to keep the Huskies scoreless. The backline of Jennifer Mihok, Nina Connell, Nicholas and Crawford helped Coron earn her second shutout of the season. Coron had eight saves in net and is now just eight saves away from breaking the all-time UB career record for most saves.

Up Next

The Bulls will take a road trip next weekend, taking on Toledo on Friday, October 16 at 4:00 pm, followed by a match up at Bowling Green on Sunday, October 18 at 1:00 pm.
