After three consecutive shutouts, UB snapped out of its slump with three goals against Northern Illinois on Sunday, all three coming from players who already had one goal this year. Sophomores Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) and Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and freshman Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) each scored their second goal of the season on Sunday.
Brooke's Big Plays McCalla, a playmaking forward, drew the two biggest fouls of Sunday's 3-2 double overtime win against Northern Illinois. Down 2-1, McCalla drew a foul in the goal box in the 68th minute and converted on the resulting penalty shot to send the game into overtime. In the second overtime, McCalla drew the foul that set up Fage's direct kick to win it. McCalla's penalty shot was the first by a Bulls' player since Jenny Dannecker converted on a free shot on Oct. 3, 2004 against Kent State.
Stepping back into the starting lineup for the first time in two games, Fage delivered in a big way on Sunday. After she hit the crossbar in the first overtime, Fage put home the gamewinner in the 102nd minute on a direct kick from 25 yards out to beat Northern Illinois, 3-2. Ironically, her first shot on goal was saved by the Northern Illinois' goalkeeper, but Turner kicked in the rebound to give Fage the assist.
Turner's goal in the 60th minute of Sunday's game ended a streak of three consecutive shutouts against the Bulls. Turner has found the net twice this season, both in very opportune times, as her goal in the fifth minute of Buffalo's 1-0 win against Ball State also ended a two-game goal-less stretch.
Calvert Keeps Saving Senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) made nine saves in Friday's 2-0 loss to Western Michigan. It was only the second time this year she had made nine saves in a game, posting 11 against Niagara on Sept. 16. Calvert, who leads the MAC with an average of 5.85 saves per game, has been forced to make nine or more saves five times in her career, with a career-high 13 against Ohio on Oct. 24, 2004.
Taking a Shot Buffalo's 20 shots in Sunday's 3-2 double-overtime win against Northern Illinois was the team's highest total since taking 21 against Toledo in a 5-2 win on Oct. 15, 2004.
On the Outside With more than half of the MAC regular season's 11 games already played, Buffalo once again is looking at the postseason as it is in ninth place with five league games remaining. The top eight move on to the MAC quarterfinals. In 2004, a devastating 0-5-1 road trip in the heart of the MAC season left the Bulls out of the playoff picture after starting the year 2-1 and also wrapping up the conference season with three wins in their final four games, all played at home. However, it was Buffalo's 5-2 win against Toledo, Friday's opponent, on
Oct. 15 that sparked those three wins in the last four games and left Buffalo just
one point shy of the playoffs. |
