Bulls Win Fifth Straight, Take MAC Lead

Buffalo moved into first place in the MAC over the weekend, thanks in large part to an incredible weekend peformance by Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena). UB defeated Western Michigan on Sunday 1-0 in double overtime as Listrani scored the overtime game-winning goal. On Friday night, Listrani led the Bulls to a 4-0 win over Northern Illinois. She recorded two goals, including the gamewinner, and had an assist in the game. Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) also scored in the win at Northern Illinois, recording her fifth goal of the season, and Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) notched her first of the season as well.

Listrani Sets School Record

With three goals and an assist this past weekend, Paula Listrani set the school record for career points. She now has 103 points on her career, surpassing Nora Bender who had 102 points. Listrani becomes just the second women's player in UB history, and third soccer player, man or woman, to go over the 100-point mark for a career. She is on pace to break the career goals scored record as well. Listrani has 42 career goals, one shy of the 43 goals scored by Bender. In addition, Listrani is also second all-time in career assists with 19, four behind the top spot.

Bulls Defense Registers Sixth Shutout

The Bulls defense has been the main ingredient in the current five-game winning streak. UB has held its opponents scoreless in four of the last five games, and gave up just one goal in the other game during the streak. Buffalo recored its sixth shutout as a team and second straight with a 1-0 double overtime win over Western Michigan this past weekend. Goalkeepers Jaime Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) have each recorded three shutouts on the season with the help of the usual supporting cast in the back. Both Heather Collins and Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) have seen time at the sweeper position lately. Cherie Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Erin McGarry (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) have both played in the back as well and have both started in every game this year, and Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) has played tough off the bench on the defensive side.

Bulls Reach Double Digit Wins for Third-Straight Year

For the third consecutive season, the UB women's soccer team has reached double digits in wins. The Bulls are currently 10-4-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the MAC. In 1998, UB finished 10-6-2 and last season finished at 13-5-1, for a combined 33-15-3 record over the past three seasons. The school record for wins in a season is 14, set back in 1986. The Bulls still have five regular season games remaining in addition to MAC postseason games.

UB Scoring Comes From Every Direction

The Bulls have spread out the scoring this season as Buffalo has scored 34 goals on the year, 33 by UB players and 1 own goal. Those 33 goals have been scored by 12 different players. Paula Listrani leads the way with 10 goals, Emily Russell has five goals and Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) has four on the year. Two UB players have three goals each, one player has two and six players have each scored once this season. In addition, 10 different players have recorded assists this year. Listrani leads the team with six and Olszewski has five assists.

Upcoming Action...

The Bulls will hit the road again this weekend for more Mid-American Conference action. The first game will be at Miami on Friday, October 13 at 4 pm. That game will be an important battle for both teams in trying to gain that first place standing in the conference. UB will then travel to play at Ball State on Sunday, October 15 at 1 pm.
