Bulls Battle Broncos To 2-2 Tie

Samantha Roth’s first career goal sends game into OT

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team fought the Western Michigan Broncos to a 2-2 tie on Friday evening in Kalamazoo. Junior Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton) and senior Samantha Roth (Rochester, NY/Arcadia) each scored for Buffalo.

McCalla got UB on the scoreboard first, just 3:45 into the game as she found the back of the net on a header off of a Katie Fage (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) corner kick. The goal served as McCalla’s fourth of the year while the assist was Fage’s second.

The Bulls owned the lead for the majority of the first half until the Broncos evened the score with just over five minutes remaining in the first period. Western Michigan struck again at the 51:18 mark to take the 2-1 lead but Roth sent the game into overtime with six seconds left in regulation. The unassisted goal was the first of Roth’s career.

Neither team was able to score in either overtime period, making the 2-2 score final. Freshman Lindsey Bailey (Burlington, ON/Assumption) finished with eight shots, including seven on goal while junior Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, ON/A.N. Myer) ended the contest with six shots, two on goal. As a unit, Buffalo outshot WMU 30-22.

UB Goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) recorded seven saves in the match while the Broncos’ Julia Francy was forced to make 10 saves on the night.

Buffalo will return to action on Sunday with a match against Northern Illinois. Game time is set for 11:00 am in DeKalb, IL.
