UB Uses Early Goal and Holds on for 1-0 Win UB got an early goal against Central Michigan and then used its defense to hold the Chippewas scoreless and record a 1-0 win Friday night. The Bulls scored in the early stages of the game as Cherie Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) chipped a pass over the CMU defenders and Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) knocked it past the goalie for a 1-0 UB lead. That was all the Buffalo defense would need as it held its opponent scoreless for the second straight game. Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) recorded seven saves and her second shutout of the season.
Team Defense Comes Through Again Buffalo recored its fourth shutout as a team and second straight with a 1-0 win over Central Michigan. Goalkeepers Jaime Adams and Emily Cox have each recorded two shutouts with the help of the usual supporting cast in the back. Both Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Linnaea DiNallo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) have seen time at the sweeper position lately. Cherie Rogers and Erin McGarry (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) have both played in the back as well and have both started in every game this year, and Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) has played tough off the bench on the defensive side. Buffalo also recorded shutouts earlier this year with a 2-0 win over Marshall, a 1-0 win over Duquesne and a 2-0 win at Stony Brook.
UB Scoring Comes From Every Direction The Bulls have spread out the scoring this season as Buffalo has scored 29 goals on the year, 28 by UB players and 1 own goal. Those 28 goals have been scored by 11 different players. Paula Listrani leads the way with seven goals, and Nicole Olszewski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Emily Russell both have four on the year. Two UB players have three goals each, one player has two and five players have each scored once this season. In addition, nine different players have recorded assists this year. Listrani and Olszewski lead the team with five assists each.
Closing in on the Record The Paula Listrani record watch is on. Listrani is on pace to set UB career records in both goals scored and points scored. She currently has 39 goals, good for fourth place. Nora Bender is the career leader with 43 goals. In points, Listrani currently has 96 career points, which ranks as the third-best total in school history. Nora Bender is the career leader with 102 career points. In addition, Listrani could become just the third UB player, man or woman, to surpass the 100-point mark for a career (Bender, Steve Butcher). She is also third all-time in career assists with 18, five behind the top spot.
Upcoming Action... The Bulls will hit the road again this weekend for more Mid-American Conference action. UB will play at Northern Illinois on Friday, October 6, and then at Western Michigan on Sunday, October 8. The Bulls next home game will be an October 20 matchup with Bowling Green.
