BUFFALO, NY-The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season Friday night, downing Eastern Michigan University, 3-2. The Bulls mounted a second half comeback sparked by sophomore Andrea Vescio’s (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) two goal performance and a single goal from junior defender Amanda Corteau (St. Catherines, Ontario/ Denis Morris), her first of the season.

Eastern Michigan got on the board first in the 16th minute of the contest when freshman Ashley Rodrigues scored a one touch goal from the top of the box off a cross from freshman Maggie Christensen. The Eagles then extended their lead at the 28:53 mark when freshman Deana Kitner roped the ball over UB goalkeeper, redshirt freshman Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) to extend the EMU lead to two goals.

After a series of squandered scoring opportunities in the final third of the first half, the Bulls capitalized as Vescio was able to settle a shot from sophomore Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontaio/Dunbarton) off the cross-bar to score Buffalo’s first goal from the top of the box.

Shortly into the second half of the highly physical contest, Vescio composed a pass from junior Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) and tied the game on a laser that soared past EMU goalkeeper, freshman Monique Budani.

With the game tied at two goals a piece and just over seven minutes remaining in the battle, Couteau cleared through a crowded goal-box and connected with junior Katie Fage’s (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) corner kick to give the Bulls the 3-2 lead. The headed-in goal was Corteau’s first of the season, while the assist also served as Fage’s first point of the season.

In the win, UB goalkeeper Coron picked up her fourth win of the season, inking five saves on the night. Budani registered six saves in the loss for the Eagles. Buffalo outshot Eastern Michigan 17-7 and also topped the Eagles in corner kicks, 7-2. The corporeal battle featured 21 total fouls, with both teams combining for 16 in the second half of play. With the win, the Bulls now stand at 4-6 on the season, including a 1-2-0 MAC record. Eastern Michigan falls to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the MAC.

Buffalo returns to action at UB Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 1 for a 1:00 pm MAC contest against the Central Michigan Chippewas.
