Women's Soccer Defeats Central Michigan

Bulls Record 1-0 Win in TV Game

BUFFALO, NY — The UB women's soccer team scored in the first three minutes of the game and then used a gritty defensive effort to hold on for a 1-0 Mid-American Conference win over Central Michigan.

The Bulls broke free in the early stages of the game to get the goal. Cherie Rogers (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) broke through the middle and chipped a pass over the Central Michigan defenders. The CMU goalie hedged to come out for the ball, allowing UB's Emily Russell (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) to get to the ball and score the game winning goal at the 2:46 mark.

With the early goal, UB hoped to have an easy time with the Chippewas, but CMU fought back hard and controlled the game for the rest of the first half. Central Michigan recored ten shots in the first half, but UB goalie Emily Cox (Fairport, NY/Fairport) denied the CMU attackers and recorded four of her seven saves in the first half. It was also her second shutout of the season in sixth start.

In the second half, the Bulls' defense continued to shine. Central Michigan was limited to just five shots in the second half in their relentless attack. UB controlled the ball midway through the second half and had a chance at a goal late on a shot by Megan Hosey (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), but Central Michigan goalie Elizabeth Quiney made a diving stop to keep the Chippewa hopes alive, but UB would hold on for the 1-0 win.

Tonight's game was taped by Adelphia and can be seen on Adelphia HTTV Channel 18 in the Buffalo area on Saturday, September 30, at 12:30 pm and again at 7:30 pm.

Buffalo improves to 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference and 7-4 overall while Central Michigan falls to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the MAC. The Bulls will face defending MAC champion Eastern Michigan on Sunday, October 1, at 1 pm at UB's RAC Field.
