Buffalo has faced five teams in nine games that have held a SoccerBuzz.com regional ranking this year (Lehigh, Army, Central Florida, Cornell, Ball State). It has come out on top twice, defeating Army, which was ranked 12th in the Northeast region at the time, 3-2, on Aug. 28 and Ball State, which was ranked 13th in the Great Lakes region last week, 1-0, on Sunday. Against ranked teams this year, Buffalo has scored six of its 10 goals and lost by more than one goal only once (a 2-0 loss to Lehigh in the season opener on Aug. 26).
Making the List Senior Natalia Crofut (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) assisted on Sunday's game-winning goal against regionally-ranked Ball State, winning a corner and tapping the ball to Ashley Turner for the gamewinner. Crofut entered the week leading the league in shots and in the top five in both goals and points. She also is in 26th place in MAC history in points with 53, just two points shy of tying for 24th place with Nicki Downey of Kent State (1997-2000) and Abby Leopold of Ohio (1999-2002).
Sophomore Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) scored her first career goal in Sunday's 1-0 win over Ball State. Turner, who played in just six games last season, is one of four Bulls to have scored their first career goals this year, along with freshmen Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer), Brooke McCalla (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) and Jenessa Banwell (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park). Five of the Bulls' 10 goals this season have come from those four players.
Senior Anna-Lesa Calvert (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams) continues to move her way up the MAC record book, as her five-save shutout of Ball State on Sunday left her just seven saves shy of becoming the third goaltender in conference history to make 300 career saves, following Lindsay Mitchell of Kent State (1999-2002) and Erika Flanders of Bowling Green (1999-2002). Her 12th career shutout, the Ball State win also left her one shutout shy of tying Western Michigan's Jennifer Haller (1997-2000) for eighth place in conference history.
On the Road Buffalo hits the road for two tough conference tests this weekend, as it plays at Eastern Michigan on Friday. The Eagles beat Akron, 2-1, on Friday and lost to Ohio, 2-1 in double overtime, Sunday. Central Michigan, winners of matches against Ohio and Akron
last weekend to make it an early conference frontrunner, welcomes Buffalo
for a Sunday game. |
