For the third weekend in a row, the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team split its weekend games, falling to the George Washington Colonials on Friday 2-1 in overtime and rebounding on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the Howard Lady Bison. Both games were played on the road in Washington, D.C.

Coron Earns First Shut Out of 2007

Junior goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) earned her first shutout of the season in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Howard. In the team’s weekend road trip through Washington, D.C., Coron allowed just two goals in almost 200 minutes. Coron has 50 saves through the team’s first eight matches and is averaging 1.79 GA. The shutout was the fourth of Coron’s career.

Senior forward Heidi Griffiths (Clarence, NY/Clarence) has been strong up front for the Bulls, leading the team in goals, with four. Griffiths is also tied for tops on the team in points, with nine. Despite only appearing in six of the team’s first eight games, Griffiths has amassed nine points so far in 2007, including a goal over the weekend against Howard.

Junior Brooke McCalla (Pickering, ON/Dunbarton) has established herself as a solid playmaker throughout her career, but this season, she has been extremely even in her distribution, notching three goals and three assists, tieing her for the team lead in points, with nine. McCalla added an assist over the weekend, dishing a pass to Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) for the Bulls’ second goal against Howard.

Next up

UB will begin the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule on the road, taking on Akron on Friday at 7:30 pm. The Bulls are then set to meet Ohio in Athens on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

The Zips are currently 5-1-2 on the season, suffering their first loss on Sunday, falling 3-1 to Wyoming. The Bobcats are 0-5-2, most recently upended by Pittsburgh 1-0 in Pittsburgh.
