Women’s Soccer Stumbles Against Ball State

Cardinals clip Bulls 3-2, Julie Dale nets first career goal

MUNCIE, IN -- The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team came up short on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Ball State Cardinals, 3-2. Freshman Julie Dale (Cary, NC/Raleigh Charter) and sophomore Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) picked up one goal each while freshman Caitlin Higgins (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) and senior Jessica Roesch (Centennial, CO/Grandview) were each credited with an assist in the contest.

Ball State got on the board just 51 seconds into the game when sophomore Emily Rein scored unassisted off a turnover in the box. The Bulls were then able to mount offensive pressure of their own at the 28:55 mark to tie the game when UB’s Turner deposited a shot through the pipes from the top of the 18-yard box off a Ball State clearing attempt.

The Cardinals broke the tie in the 35th minute, when senior Vandi Ogden teed off on a Buffalo clearing attempt, finding the back of the net unassisted from the top of the box, to score her third goal of the season. Ball State extended its lead to a duo of goals in the 52nd minute when Amy Holst scored her 4th goal of the season. Holst placed the ball past Buffalo goalkeeper Amy Coron (Farmington, NY/Victor) off of a free kick by Ogden near midfield that was flicked into the box by Rein.

The Bulls, however, continued to battle as Dale brought Buffalo to within one goal in the 72nd minute. The freshman scored the first goal of her career on a header inside the box off a short corner kick. Roesch and Higgins were credited with the assist.

Ball State goalkeeper Rachael Murphy inked one assist in the contest while Buffalo’s Coron picked up eight saves in the setback. The Bulls were outshot by the Cardinals 22-5 on the afternoon.

Buffalo will be back in action, at home, on Friday, Sept. 29 to take on Eastern Michigan in a Mid-American conference match-up. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
